How to Choose the Right Earrings for Your Face Shape

August 3, 2026 · Thea's Collection

Earrings sit closer to your face than almost any other piece of jewellery, which means the right silhouette can genuinely change how a look reads. There’s no strict rulebook here – the best earrings are the ones you feel great in – but understanding a few basics about proportion and shape makes shopping a lot easier.

Round Faces

If your face is roughly as wide as it is long with soft, curved edges, look for earrings that add length and angles – earcuffs with vertical drop details, or elongated danglers. Avoid perfectly round studs or hoops of a similar size to your face, which can emphasise roundness rather than balance it.

Oval Faces

Oval is often considered the most versatile face shape – nearly every earring style works well. This is a great opportunity to choose based on the outfit or occasion rather than face shape alone: studs for daily wear, hoops for a casual look, and chandbalis or danglers for festive occasions.

Square Faces

Strong jawlines and angular features pair beautifully with earrings that soften the edges – rounded hoops, curved drops, or teardrop shapes. Avoid sharply geometric or angular earring designs, which can echo (rather than balance) an already strong jawline.

Heart-Shaped Faces

With a wider forehead tapering to a narrower chin, the goal is to add a little width at the jaw. Earrings that flare out at the bottom – like chandbali styles or earrings with a wider base – do this well. Avoid styles that are widest right at the top, near the ear, which can emphasise forehead width.

Long Faces

If your face is noticeably longer than it is wide, shorter, rounder earring styles help balance proportions – think button studs, small hoops, or clustered designs that sit close to the earlobe rather than drawing the eye further downward.

Beyond Face Shape: Occasion Matters Too

Face shape is one input, but occasion matters just as much. Anti-tarnish studs are ideal for the office and daily wear since they’re comfortable and low-maintenance. For weddings and festive events, don’t be afraid to go bigger – a statement dangler or jhumka earns its place when the occasion calls for it.
