How to Clean Anti-Tarnish Jewellery Safely

August 15, 2026 · Thea's Collection

Anti-tarnish plating is more resilient than standard plating, but “more resilient” isn’t the same as “needs no care.” Cleaning it wrong is one of the fastest ways to undo the benefit of the finish in the first place – here’s how to actually do it safely.

The Short Version

A soft, dry cloth after each wear is genuinely most of what anti-tarnish jewellery needs. For anything beyond that, the goal is always the same: remove surface residue without introducing water, chemicals, or abrasion to the plating.

Daily Cleaning: The Soft Cloth Habit

After each wear, a quick wipe with a soft, dry cloth (a microfibre cloth works well) removes the oils, skin contact residue, and light dust that build up over a day. This single habit, done consistently, does more for plating longevity than any occasional deep clean – because it stops residue from sitting on the surface overnight, every night.

If a Piece Needs More Than a Wipe

For light buildup that a dry cloth doesn’t fully clear, a barely damp (not wet) soft cloth can help – dampen it, wring it out thoroughly, wipe gently, then dry the piece immediately and completely with a separate dry cloth. Avoid soaking the piece, running it under a tap, or leaving any moisture sitting on the plating, even briefly.

What to Avoid

Cleaning Stone-Set or Textured Pieces

Pieces with stone settings or detailed motif work (like a lot of our temple jewellery) need a gentler touch – a soft, dry makeup brush can reach into detailing that a cloth can’t, without the risk of water sitting in a stone setting and being harder to fully dry out.

Storage Between Cleans

Cleaning only helps if storage doesn’t immediately undo it. Keep pieces in a soft pouch or a lined box, separated from other jewellery so they don’t scratch against each other, and away from direct humidity (a bathroom shelf is one of the worst places to store jewellery, cleaned or not).
